Store Hours Update

About a month ago, we asked our followers on Facebook a question we had been struggling to answer for a long time: should we extend our hours during the week, and stay closed on Sundays, or open Sundays and leave our hours as they were? We were absolutely overwhelmed by the answers and positive responses we received, and it helped make our decision, so thank you to everyone who commented!

We recently went through some staffing changes, which in turn changed our initial plans for summer hours. That being said, we want to be available for our customers when they need us to be, so we're making the following extensions to our hours:

Monday - Thursday: 10:00am - 5:30pm

Friday: 10:00am - 6:00pm

Saturday: 9:00am - 5:00pm

We hope that these extended hours later in the week will ensure that everyone has more time to see us and shop, without having to worry about racing down after work.

We are still playing with the idea of Sunday pop-up sale days throughout the summer, so follow us along on Facebook as we'll announce everything there.

We would love to hear your thoughts on the new hours; leave a comment below, on social media, or when you're in-store!

Fall in love with your art again!

We strongly believe that sometimes all your art needs is a face-lift for you to fall in love with it again - and by that, we mean new mats, and sometimes a new frame. One of our favourite reveals is the “Before & After” to the customer; where they get to see the finished product, the new choices they made versus the way their art used to look.

To illustrate the power of a good Before & After, we’ve pulled a few examples below:

Our customer loved this print, but not the dusty rose mat and frame. Mats serve two purposes: they raise the glass away from the art, giving it space to breathe; they also draw your eye to certain aspects of the art, depending on the colour of mat chosen. In the “Before”, the pink mat draws your eye across the path and mountains, and makes the flowers at the forefront the first thing you see. The original frame continues pulling the pink tones, and adds more lines to the outside of the piece.

For the “After”, we chose a pale green with citrus undertones, which calms the pink in the image, and instead highlights the fresh growth and bird perched in the cactus. While the flowers are the brightest point of the image, they’re no longer the focal point. Instead, the scene looks fresh and green, just like after rainfall. We chose a frame that was soft and organic, emulating the lines and colour of the cactus.

The next set of photos illustrates the dramatic effect that a different mat can have on an image. The purple of the “Before” draws out all the cool shadows in the watercolour; from the shadow under the fence to the shadow behind the tree, it has a cool and dappled feel to the overall image.

The “After”, a pop of citrus pale green, makes all the foliage the star of the show. The shadows are still there, but no longer the focal point of the piece; instead, the image is brighter and focuses on the light, making the fence seem brighter too.

The final set is probably one of our favourite transformations - disclaimer; we have no issues whatsoever with the Eighties! That being said, this floral watercolour was in desperate need of an update that would suit our customers’ bold and bright taste.

The “Before” featured a triple mat with a pale upper, which drew your eye out from the image. In contrast, we catered to our customers’ love of bold and chose a dark mat for the “After”. This lets the flowers be the star of the show. The frame now is sleeker with a slight metallic overtone, giving a more modern aspect to the piece.

A good rule to remember, (as this example demonstrates) is that generally light mats draw your eye to the dark parts of the image, while dark mats draw your eye to the light parts of the image.

There’s no one right way to frame a piece of art; it just depends on what you want the focal point to be!

Find us in Beautiful Downtown Brockville!

We just celebrated our twentieth anniversary, though the store doesn’t look a day over 19! Twenty years we’ve been a part of downtown Brockville, and in that time we’ve made wonderful friends, gotten to know our community, and lent a helping hand when we could. But for every handful of our customers that tell us they’re so happy we’re still around, that they always know they’ll find whatever they’re looking for when they walk in the door...there’s one person who didn’t know we existed. It’s understandable when that customer is new to the area, but what about the people who have lived in Brockville their entire lives and have never ventured downtown?

After hearing this comment numerous times, we realized that Hang Ups had to do something to let Brockville know that we existed. We already advertised in the local paper; on the local radio stations; we ran ads in other forms of print media, and acted as sponsors for various events around the city. But it still wasn’t enough, and so we have made a pact with ourselves to become advocates for the importance of shopping locally.

Every business downtown is someone’s labour of love; whether they opened it themselves or took ownership from the original proprietors, it’s their baby. These owners are invested in the success of their business, and it is their passion. This makes them experts in their field; go in to Tait’s, the Jewel Box, Echo, just to name a few, and the friendly people who work there can tell you anything you wish to know about the products they carry, or the services they provide. While the big box stores certainly have their place, by shopping locally you are not only finding that perfect item you never knew you needed, but you are also supporting the shop owners and the local economy.

Brockville is such a fantastic place, and with so much to offer, we want tourists and residents alike to take the drive and spend an afternoon wandering; plus there’s so much free parking! There are plenty of amazing and unique shops; exquisite restaurants; the 182 year old Farmer’s Market, and the view of the St. Lawrence from Blockhouse Island is second to none.

On the search for perfect and inspired giftware

It felt as though we had to wait a lifetime for sunny skies and warm weather, but summer is finally here in full force, which makes this all the harder to say: we’re already thinking about the Christmas season. It’s not our fault really, blame the retail world - we’re made to be a season ahead, conscious of the upcoming trends and themes. Despite thoughts of snow and cold toes, it is with excitement that we are looking forward to our semi-annual gift show excursion in Toronto. In the middle of August, surrounded by lush greenery and hot temperatures, huge showrooms will be transformed into winter wonderlands with all the latest and greatest in retail on display. It can be incredibly overwhelming, but we go with a single purpose: to discover unique, Canadian-made gifts and housewares that will spark the imagination.

There has been a surge of popularity with handcrafted goods, and the ability to find unique and inspired pieces is more important than ever. One of the things we enjoy most is finding new suppliers and artisans who will compliment what we already have in the store. We aim to curate a collection of high-quality, Canadian-made, handcrafted items, whether it be jewellery or decor pieces. After this set of criteria comes the most important factor: if we don’t love it, we won’t bring it back to the store. As with our framing, if we can’t stand behind our choices for gift wares, we can’t happily sell it.

And as always, we’re happy to hear suggestions from you. Found something that you think is the bee’s knees? Let us know!

One final note - we’re already planning our next Christmas window, and dreaming of a perfect vintage elegance, perhaps with a touch of Victorian glamour and steampunk. Get ready Brockville, it’s going to be something spectacular!

Our Framing Workshop with BCI

Over the span of two mornings this week (March 24 and 25) we had a group of students from BCI here to learn the basics of framing. They are part of the Specialist High Skills Major – in Arts & Culture- program, where talented and artistic students take different workshops to learn a new field.

In addition to learning how to frame, the students were also given a rundown on why framing is so important. Our very own Laurie Sponagle is an accomplished artist whose experience in showing her work, as well as teaching art as a business, makes her lessons invaluable. Over three hours, the students learned the importance of mats, glass types, frame choices, and why how an artist displays their work is just as important as how they create it. After the basics were out of the way, they got a demonstration of how we assemble a frame from start to finish (and all the math that comes with it). We were so happy that every student was engaged and interested in what we had to teach them, but the fun was only just starting.

If we took a poll, Tuesday would probably win as the better day. With only a bit of help, our young framers-in-training got to choose the mat colour they wanted for their art, work out the math (not as fun), and assemble a piece of art to take home after the course. We were blown away by how talented and intuitive these students were, and how much fun everyone seemed to be having!

For our second year of teaching this course, it was quite successful, and while we’re used to every day of work being different, this certainly took the cake. Being a part of the community, and being able to teach the talented students of this city is so important to us. The students of BCI have experienced framing firsthand, and we’re happy to share our knowledge with other school art programs! We’re also always willing to accept co-op proposals from any of the schools in the area, so drop us a line on our Contact page if framing is something that interests you!
